Description

This beautiful bird, enhanced by the afternoon sun, was sitting very still and quiet. I would have completely missed her, had it not been for the sharp eyes of our guide! With gleaming turquoise and ultramarine blue plumage, contrasting with clean white underparts, Forest Kingfishers are one of the most stunning of birds. I couldn't wait to get started on painting her sitting so patiently, waiting for some unsuspecting prey.

Of Australia's thirteen species of Kingfisher, only four of these are specialised to catch aquatic prey. Forest Kingfishers are classed as tree kingfishers (the Halcyoninae subfamily), which means they don't dive in water. Rather, their diet consists of invertabrates, small frogs and lizards. They are found in tropical and subtropical forests, mangroves, swamps, billabongs and beaches.

They are also native to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In Australia, they are found on or near the coastline from Port Stevens (NSW) northwards to Cape York and westwards across the Top End.

Forest Kingfishers are also known as Macleay's or Blue Kingfisher. There are three subspecies, of which the nominate subspecies (T. m. mackeayi)  is depicted here. It's easy to tell the sexes. The male has a complete white collar, while the female's collar is incomplete.
