Description

MESMERISED (Satin Bowerbirds)
45 x 31.67cm | 2026 | 640gsm Fabriano Artistico on 4ply museum board

This painting was a private commission from a collector who regularly has these birds visit in their backyard and wished to immortalise their beauty on their wall.

In the shadows, these birds can look a little dull. However, bring them out in sunlight and you'll be dazzled by the extraordinary shine and brilliance of the plumage of the male that transforms from black to blue! Indeed, it takes seven years for male birds to develop their glossy plumage, starting life looking nearly identical to the females.

The mature male is responsible for constructing the bower which is used for courtship, not as a nest. To enhance this structure, males collect anything blue they can find; such as pegs, bottle tops and feathers.

Taking 190 hours to complete, this artwork is unusual in that there are no airbrushed areas. It's all brushed in!
