At 165 hours to complete, this is one of the longest times ever spent on a painting, and my first attempt at painting rocks. Painted Finches are unusual in that they are mainly terrestrial, and nest among spinifex. A flock of these tiny jewels against the brick-red interior of central Australia is indeed a wonderful sight.
This painting was a private commission for a friend who bred these birds in his aviary. This made it much easier for me to gather reference photos, as photographing these birds in the wild calls for skills far greater than mine!
