Read the story about Balance of Power—Iraq 2003...

The Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) were part of a coalition deployment during the Invasion of Iraq, 2003.

In March an SAS patrol of Long Range Patrol Vehicles (LRPV), a modified form of Land Rover, were locked in combat with elements of the Iraqi Republican Guard. A wide-ranging fight, involving exchange of rifle fire, took place across vast expanses of the Iraq Western Desert.

Battling from vehicle to vehicle, across kilometres of open space proved inconclusive. Armed with a new Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System (AAWS), one of the SAS patrols launched an FGM-148 Javelin to effectively counter the enemy attack and tip the Balance of Power.

This was the first firing of a Javelin during combat operations anywhere in the world.
