Description

A long-time resident around Wynnum Creek, the Cormorant (Phalacrocorax varius) or Shag is often seen perched on branches and poles. These avid fishers catch their prey by diving entirely underwater and swimming down to depths of up to 80 metres.

Once back on dry land, they conspicuously dry their feathers by holding their wings outstretched in the sun, giving rise to the Australian saying “like a shag on a rock”, meaning to be isolated in an exposed position. This original painting by De Gillett Cox is 122 x 153 cm, Acrylic on linen, with highly textured layers of stencilling utilising De’s hand-drawn designs of the Woolly Banksia bush.
