Description

I've been on the lookout for the elusive Gang-Gang Cockatoo for a while. They are recently classified as vulnerable due to loss of older, hollow trees, feeding habitat and recent bushfires. These factors have led to a drastic reduction in the numbers of this charming cockatoo.

Armed with my new, professional grade camera, I went looking for them at Mount Taylor, as there have been sightings of them there. Incredibly, I walked right under them quite a few times without realising that all I had to do was listen! I heard quite a loud snapping and crackling up high, before looking up and seeing a whole family feeding on gum nuts! I was thrilled to finally be able to take some photos of these charming birds, the resulting painting of which you see here.

Gang-gangs are endemic to coastal regions of south-eastern Australia, preferring forests and woodlands in the mountains. They migrate short distances during winter into more open habitats, but need to return to denser forests to breed as they need tall trees with hollows for nesting.
