Description

The impressive Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is a species that I have hardly dared to paint due to its majesty and sheer size. Sometimes it's necessary as an artist to take on a subject that is daunting. Due to this painting being a commissioned work, there was no other choice...it's sink or swim!

These stunning birds are native to the south-east of Australia and measure up to 65cm in length. The sexes are similar, with the male having a dark beak and pinkish eye ring, while the female has a bone-coloured beak with a grey eye ring and slightly larger and brighter yellow cheek patch.

With their distinctive wailing calls which sound rather like "ee-wha" or "kee-ow", they are usually heard before being seen. They make long journeys by flying at great heights while calling to each other. Outside the breeding season they may converge into flocks of 100 birds or more.

Nesting takes place in vertical tree hollows of tall trees, generally eucalypts. These hollows may be up to 2 metres deep, with a base of wood chips.

They have been reported feeding on banksia cones 10 days after bushfires open the follicles. The client requested some greenery in the foreground. Luckily there is a banksia growing in our front yard, which provided the perfect reference.
