Description

A simple painting of a Chestnut Teal. With their beautiful colour combination of metallic green and rich chestnut, I couldn't wait to paint this! It should be noted that my model was a captive bird with a clipped wing, showing the green speculum that would normally be covered by the primary feathers.

It was my second attempt at painting water : the most difficult part was building up very light washes of the ripples, as the concentric ovals needed to be painted freehand. Anyone who paints in watercolour knows that most errors cannot be erased. This is what makes watercolour so difficult, but so challenging!

Chestnut teals are commonly distributed in south-eastern and south-western Australia, but vagrant birds have been seen as far south as New Zealand.
