Description

The Wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax) is Australia’s largest bird of prey. It has a maximum reported wingspan of almost 3 metres. The enormous size, black to dark brown colouration, distinctive wedge-shaped tail and long, fully feathered legs of this powerful hunter make it an awe-inspiring sight in the deserts and rocky plains of Australia’s Outback regions. A group of eagles may be called an Aerie, a soar, or a convocation.

This original painting by De Gillett Cox is 91 x 122 cm, Acrylic on linen, and utilises elements of negative and positive painting. Each flight feather has been hand painted with a single stroke of a large palette knife, using texture paste, and then glazed with transparent colour.
